Her situation is an extreme version of a common enough story.According to one recent survey, one in four office workers gets romantically involved with a colleague at some point in their lives. But what strikes me is that while it always takes two to tango, it's almost inevitably women who come off worst after an affair. In the name of research, I have become obsessed with the secret lives of working women, as I've written a novel in which two ladies - one senior and one junior - embark on affairs at the oil company they work for.
Tracy, an unhappily married advertising executive in her mid-30s with three young children, had a brief but intense affair with a junior colleague. I knew what I was doing was unprofessional, but never thought about the risks.' It can seem odd that sterile offices should be perfect breeding grounds for passion.

They are harmless though, just naughty enough to be fun.
Yet such relationships can become dangerous - there is a tipping point (usually involving alcohol) and beyond that it is hard to go back.
'We worked on deals late into the night,' said Stephanie, a corporate lawyer in her mid-30s who was recently married yet was embarking on an affair with a married colleague.
'I saw him much more than I saw my husband and felt I had much more in common with him.' Women often find themselves falling for men at work to whom they otherwise wouldn't give a second glance.
'In a normal relationship, the end means not seeing each other,' said Rachel. My husband and I ended up seeing a marriage counsellor. There was nothing left between us.' And while Rachel's career all but stalled, her lover's thrived.
'I ended up seeing a therapist who advised me to leave my job, which I did. The junior women I spoke to who embarked on extra-marital affairs told me that along with losing their hearts, they lost their jobs, too.
And, though an outdated idea, a woman who has had an affair with a colleague is often regarded with more prejudice than the man she has been sleeping with. 'He might have been an idiot,' she said, 'but I fell in love with him.
